Recommendations when you get your Business Card Commercially Printed
Tip 1: Know your Limitations with CMYK Color
Before you begin designing a business card, you’ll want to decide whether you are going to use spot color or process colors, also known as CMYK color for commercial printing. CMYK of four color printing produces a wide range of colors by mixing varying percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks together.
In the past, a CMYK printed business card costs more than a spot-color printed business card. With either color type of printing ink colors used require a separate printing press plate and process color printing usually requires four inks, unless special tinting plates are used as well. This entails more setup time for a press operator. If you are printing only a small number of publications, the cost per publication may be prohibitively expensive to have them commercially printed.
Tip 2: What is Spot Color?
Spot color costs vary depending on how many inks you will use and the type of inks (metallic, fluorescent, vegetable-based). Typically, you will use very few, but you can create the effect of a wider range of colors by using tints of an ink as shown below. For example, a printer can create screen tints of spot colors, rather than separate plates, and thus vary the colors without increasing printing costs. A printer can also combine tint values of spot colors to create more colors.

The cost of producing a business card also depends on the type of paper used for printing, the complexity of the publication’s graphics, and on the type of finishing desired. Some of the common types of protective finishings that are available are gloss varnish, Aqueous Coating or UV Coating.
